E-cigarettes Could Help 70,000 Smokers Quit
E-cigarettes could help around 70,000 smokers in England quit every single year
A new study has found that e-cigarettes could give a helping hand to 50,000 to 70,000 smokers every year. Published in the scientific journal Addiction, the study highlights the importance of e-cigarettes as a smoking cessation.
The study was completed with data collected for the Smoking Toolkit, a series of surveys dating back to 2006. Researchers estimate that in 2017 alone, around 70,000 people quit smoking tobacco thanks to vaping.
It’s reported that there are half as many vapers to smokers in the UK. This has rapidly increased every year as e-cigarettes become more popular.
Dr Emma Beard, Senior Research Associate at UCL said, ‘This study builds on population surveys and clinical trials that find e-cigarettes can help smokers to stop. England seems to have found a sensible balance between regulation and promotion of e-cigarettes.”
“Marketing is tightly controlled so we are seeing very little use of e-cigarettes by never-smokers of any age while millions of smokers are using them to try to stop smoking or to cut down the amount they smoke.” Says Lead Author, Dr Emma Beard.
George Butterworth, senior policy Manager at Cancer Research UK who funded the study said, “Research so far shows that vaping is less harmful than smoking tobacco and can help people to stop smoking. So it’s good that over 50,000 people managed to give up in 2017. For the best chance of quitting, get support from a Stop Smoking Service who can help you find the right tools for you.”
Importance of Flavours
A study from the Centre of Substance Use Research (CSUR), funded by Fontem Ventures, found smokers were more likely to quit if they found a flavour to vape that they loved.
The study focused on 20,000 frequent vapers in the US and what products they were enjoying. The majority of vapers who had switched from traditional smoking were found to have transitioned from tobacco to non-tobacco flavours.
This shows how crucial it is to have a wide range of delicious tasting eliquids. There are a huge number of smokers who are pondering about making the switch. This can be made easier for them if there’s a flavour that tickles their fancy. The study found that over 82% of the people surveyed, fruit and fruit beverage flavours were preferred.
